Our Story
Founded in 1997 by James E. Ray (“Baba Djuann”), Xaala Mainama began as a cultural arts center inspired by West African “Warrior” training—teaching young boys the skills, traits, and habits vital to becoming strong, responsible men. Over time, the program expanded to include girls, women, and people from all walks of life, united by a shared desire to celebrate African heritage and empower the next generation.
What started with a circle of drummers grew into a vibrant ensemble, offering youth a positive alternative to violence and disconnection. We believe that when young people know the greatness of their ancestors, they walk taller—with pride, purpose, and possibility. If you can see it, you can be it.
OUR MISSION
Xaala Mainama exists to uplift communities through the power of African cultural arts.
We guide young adults toward growth, cultural understanding, and community healing.
From Juneteenth celebrations to Black History Month Performances
Each performance is a powerful celebration of African heritage—uplifting audiences, inspiring unity, and awakening cultural pride. We’ve shared our African drumming, singing and more at Baltimore festivals, colleges, and cultural events and across North America.
